Michael matriculated at Camps Bay High School where he was a prefect and a member of the first cricket, rugby, soccer and athletics teams. After completing his national service he attained his Bachelor of Business Science degree in marketing and economics at The University of Cape Town in 1986. He achieved a distinction for his thesis: A Comparative Store Image Study between Meltzer Supermarket (A family business) and Checkers – Vredenburg. This involved undertaking in-depth research to identify those factors of the marketing mix that combined to create an image for each
supermarket and how the self-image of the target markets correlated with that of each supermarket.
After graduating he joined his father and siblings in their rural family business. This diverse organisation consisted of supermarkets, furniture retail stores, a groceries wholesale business, commercial and residential property companies and a hotel. This gave him an invaluable experience in and intimate knowledge of the complexities of a family business.
After his sibling emigrated and his father retired in 1993 he took over the control of the furniture retail outlets, carpeting division and property companies. By 2002 he had been awarded the Southern Africa distributorship for 2 of the largest carpeting and hand tufted rug manufacturers in the world namely, Mohawk Industries, listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Tai Ping Rugs of China, a Super Brand company, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
In 2004 he invented, developed and patented the PoleCat and created a start-up company with the same name. Here he gained experience in product invention and patenting, research and development, the start-up processes, manufacturing and market penetration. While being based
Cape Town, he supplied national companies most notably
• Hang Ten,
• Cape Union Mart,
• South African Breweries
and many other credible local and regional organisations.
As a start-up business, PoleCat was also selected by WITS Business School for a case study in 2006.
Michael has undertaken coaching and many self-development courses and in 2011 achieved a lifelong goal of summiting Mount Kilimanjaro. Through these experiences and his entrepreneurial spirit, he has, above all, come to understand the impact of tenacity, perseverance, emotional health and wellbeing on the performance of leadership and management of an organisation and the importance of continued skills development of all members of an organisation so as to achieve their personal goals and those set for their organisation.
Ready for a new chapter in his life and to learn what it takes to be a successful realtor, Michael was invited to join Remax Living - Team Atlantic in late February 2015. Since then he has been involved in the sale of numerous properties on the Atlantic Seaboard, City Bowl and Milnerton area. In August
2016 he qualified as a Professional Practitioner in Real Estate. After three years of experience as a practitioner serving his buyers, sellers, tenants and landlords he has made decision to venture out on his own as an independent contractor and continues to service the Atlantic Seaboard,City Centre and City Bowl residential and commercial real estate market.
